Workshops will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis
¨ S T E M for School Age Programs – Deborah Fitzgerald, from Cub Care Children’s Center, Vestal, NY will introduce simple activities that engage children’s natural curiosity and encourage inquiry and problem solving. She will show how STEM content can be implemented with low cost or no cost materials.
¨ Autism Spectrum Disorders and Behavior Management for Children with Disabilities – Bethany Williams, from Child Care Council, Rochester, NY will highlight current research in the field of Autism, examine characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorders and share easily implemented strategies for managing challenging behaviors.
¨ Brain Development and the Effects of Trauma – Nancy Dickerson, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Cortland, NY will share information about the impact of abuse and neglect on brain development and cognitive abilities. The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, as well as factors that create resiliency, will be discussed.
¨ Understanding and Responding to Child Sexual Behaviors – Lyn Staac, from The Advocacy Center, Ithaca, NY will describe normal and expected child sexual development as well as yellow and red flag behaviors which might indicate abusive behavior. She will offer advice for communicating with parents and when to seek assistance from professionals in the field.
¨ Custody Orders and Legal Issues in Child Care – Meryl Phipps works as a Legal Assistant at Citizens Concerned for Children, a local non-profit law firm that represents children in Tompkins County Family Court and as a Special Projects Coordinator at the Downtown Ithaca Children’s Center. She will be sharing information about custody and legal issues that arise regarding children in child care settings including custody orders and the rights of custodial and non-custodial parents.
¨ Identification and Prevention of Child Abuse and Maltreatment – Kristi Taylor, from The Advocacy Center, Ithaca, NY will share information on how to identify and prevent child abuse and child maltreatment.
