The Child Care Crisis in Our Community

Join the intergenerational campaign to save child care centers.

Child care is critical.
Parents cannot go to work and contribute to the local economy without child care.
It keeps children safe, healthy, and learning. Today’s children will become tomorrow’s caregivers.

The pandemic has hurt child care centers.
Centers operate with thin profit margins, as it is costly to deliver high quality care. Increased costs and reduced revenue as a result of the pandemic have created large deficits, leaving centers at high risk of closure.

Your help is needed!
Give to this intergenerational campaign to make sure child care is here when families need it most.

Make a gift to ensure child care centers survive the pandemic by Adopting a Classroom ($5,000) or Saving a Spot for Future Children ($1,000/spot). Gifts of other amounts are also welcome. Donors who Adopt a Classroom have the option of maintaining connection with the classroom.

Child care: An essential service

Federal and state monies have been slow to reach centers and come with many challenging restrictions.

Preschool Classroom: PreCovid

Preschool classrooms are not allowed to operate at their maximum capacity due to pandemic regulations. Each classroom is serving 2-5 fewer children per class, though it still needs the same number of teachers. In Tompkins County, there are 32 preschool classrooms in 17 centers. Each classroom is losing $2,000-$5,000/month in revenue.

Gender Disparities

The gender disparities in caregiving remain significant. A Sept. 2020 study conducted by McKinsey & Company, found that women are 1.3x more likely than men to consider leaving the workforce. Women who leave or downshift their careers often experience losses for years to come. The ability of women to return post-pandemic, will rely on the availability of child care.

When child care centers close, they don't come back.

Join an intergenerational coalition to support child care in our community!

It takes a village to support our children. In times of social distancing and masks, we can come together across generations to support the child care sector so it is there for our communities’ families.
