Frequently Asked Questions for child care providers.
In NYS, you can care for no more than 2 non-related children for more than 3 hours per day without obtaining a registration or license. If you would like to care for more than 2 non-related children for more than 3 hours a day, you must first be licensed or registered. A registered Family Child Care Provider can care for up to 6 children not enrolled in Kindergarten or above (no more than 2 under the age of 2 years) and 2 school-age children (enrolled in Kindergarten above) if approved.
A licensed Group Family Child Care Provider can care for up to 14 children not enrolled in Kindergarten or above (no more than 2 under the age of 2 years for each caregiver) and 4 school-age children (enrolled in Kindergarten above) if approved.
School-age Child Care programs and Child Care Centers are given a maximum number of children they can care for based on their available space.
All regulated child care providers are mandated to 30 hours of training every 2 years covering these 9 topic areas.
If you would like to be able to administer medications, you must take an 8-hour course called Medication Administration Training (MAT) taught by a health care professional. If you need assistance in finding a MAT trainer, please contact our office. In addition, you must have an individual on site at all times that is certified in Infant/Child CPR and First-Aid.
